![]() He was an unlikely savior Brittain had never translated a video game before, let alone one that would eventually produce a script that would include more than 66,000 words. The head of Project Exile, modder Christo “Cirosan” Brittain, is probably best known for the popular “full dialogue” mod for Fallout 4 that let players to see everything their character would say. “Where were you when the curse was broken?” responded one fan. A group of modders-a collaboration spread across the United States, France, and Austria-released something they’d worked on for nearly a year: Project Exile, an endeavor built on top of a graveyard full of past failures, but whose success could not exist without the stunted efforts of those who came before it. In late May, as most of the world geared up for a week of glitzy E3 announcements about the future of games, history slotted into place. It’s where translation attempts go to die. The game was built on indecipherable “spaghetti code” where moving one piece can result in the game imploding for no logical reason there isn’t enough space to fit English translations without crashing the game, which means you’d have to hack it and force it to accept more one chapter in particular-the dreaded chapter five-was coded in such a perplexing way it lead to the whole “translation patch killer” branding. But in reality, translating Thracia 776 is a specifically daunting and unique challenge. The fifth in the series, it was released for the Super Famicom (what the SNES was called in Japan) in 1999, and like the others, it’s a tactical RPG set in a fantasy world of politics and prophecies. If we want to get really obscure, I'm still waiting for a decent fan translation of Tear Ring Saga, the game the creator of Fire Emblem made after he left Nintendo which is basically just Fire Emblem but crazier.“I never really officially told anyone I gave up,” admitted Kirb, a renowned Fire Emblem hacker, and one of the most recent to declare Thracia 776 their white whale, “because I didn’t want to feel like I betrayed the people that were waiting patiently for it to progress.”Īt first blush, Thracia 776 isn’t that different from other Fire Emblem games. I wish Nintendo would officially localize and release some of the older FE games in the west, but there probably aren't enough anime waifus in those games to make them worth the trouble. ![]() The current one for that game once again falls under the very generous purview of "functional". The team that made this translation has also said they hope to work on Thracia 776 after this patch is complete, which is good news since the translation available for that game is pretty infamous for being rather poor.Ī new Thracia 776 patch would be fantastic. ![]() It seems that Awakening and Fates have expanded the Fire Emblem fanbase to the point where there are now a lot of new fans that are going back and creating proper translations for the older entries in the series, which is really exciting to see. Even so, it is pretty awesome that this classic entry in the Fire Emblem series has finally gotten a full English I was trying to be nice in my post but yes there was a lot of room for improvement in the old patches for Holy Wars. The patch is still in "beta" so the team is releasing regular updates that fix various bugs people are finding, so some might want to wait until the final patch is released before jumping in. ![]() I began playing Genealogy of the Holy Wars at the beginning of the year and luckily my save file works fine with the new translation, which so far seems to be a big improvement over past attempts to translate this game. However, thanks to this team's efforts, the game can finally be played from beginning to end entirely in English, graphics and all. There have been other English patches for Holy Wars available for years but they were unfinished and didn't translate everything. The folks from Project Naga, who have been creating a text translation of this game for some time, and DDSTranslation, the guy that created the patches for Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei as well as Romancing SaGa, released a beta patch for their translation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy Wars. ![]()
